The Famous Grouse Manufacturers Description
Brand HistoryMatthew Gloag & Son Limited established 1800
In 1896, Matthew Gloag developed a Blended Scotch Whisky to appeal to the growing numbers of sporting gentlemen who were being lured to the Scottish Highlands. He chose the apt name ‘Grouse Brand’ and his daughter, Phillippa, sketched the Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) – Scotland’s national gamebird. As word spread and popularity increased, the blend was christened ‘The Famous Grouse’
The Red Grouse still appears on the label today and is a fitting emblem for this renowned whisky.
Production
Rigorous Quality Standards
We are obsessed with quality control
We nose every cask of grain and malt whisky that goes into the blend
From distillation to bottling, each bottle goes through 6,002 quality checks to ensure perfection every time
Many of our competitors in the industry would carry out approximately 1% of this number of checks
“Blend for quality, sample for consistency”
(John Ramsay, Group Whisky Quality Manager)
Only the Finest Whiskies
Against the backdrop of the most consistent and harmonious grain whisky, the malts that go into The Famous Grouse are the best in the industry
The two most significant malts in the blend, The Macallan and Highland Park, are in the top 5 ina filed of over 100 malt whiskies
“The Macallan is a Rolls Royce among malts”
(Harrods Book of Whiskies)
“The greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky”
(Michael Jackson, Whisky Expert)
Unique Cask Selection Policy
We use only our own casks for all of the whiskies that go into The Famous Grouse
We inspect every single cask to ensure it reaches the required standard
A uniquely high proportion of our casks are hand-crafted from oak and seasoned with Olorosso sherry in Andalucia, Spain, to our precise specification
Most of the new malt whiskies that we distil are put into this sherry wood, which is costly, but gives a richer flavour and colour
Spanish oak sherry casks give a round richness to the whisky
So important is this to us that we commission 90% of the new casks made in Spain for the Scotch Whisky industry
“Wood is the most important single factor in producing superior whiskies. Our rigorous wood policy has been evolved over many years to achieve nothing but the best”
(George Espie, Managing Director, Clyde Cooperage)
Special Marrying Programme
We typically marry the malt and grain whiskies together for six months before bottling (most brands do no marrying at all)
This time-consuming marriage process results in a smoother, more consistent and stable product
The whisky is then filtered gently, in order to preserve the blends full character
“The current practice of harsh, chilled filtration which most whiskies are subjected to, is to be regretted since it strips out much of the spirits texture, flavour and natural colour. I’m pleased to say that The Famous Grouse doesn’t do this”
(Charles MacLean, Editor, The Whisky Magazine)
Exceptional Skill in Blending
All of these hard facts don’t produce the magic of The Famous Grouse taste. That only comes from Highland Distillers’ consummate skill in hand picking component whiskies to blend together – Speyside, Highland, Islay and grain whisky – to a secret and unchanging recipe
Drawing upon more than a century of experience, we employ a unique batch process in our blending, drawing upon up to ten individually blended and married batches for each bottling run. This doubly guarantees the consistency of The Famous Grouse
