Acqua Di Parma Manufacturers Description
Traditional savoir-vivreParma: enticing, cultured, aristocratic, simple, even rustic. A city with a mellow, welcoming fascination, with its enviable way of life combining the pleasures of art, food, music and savoir-vivre in general. In Parma, the past merges seamlessly with the present: history and traditions are still today the lifeblood of everyday life.
Our history began here in 1916, when the last echoes of the Belle Époque could still be heard, conjuring up the whirl of high society, the Can-Can, trips on the Orient Express, evenings of dance and theatre, and the last luxurious horse-drawn carriages.
Acqua di Parma made its appearance and rapidly spread through the highest echelons of the city, its reputation carried by word of mouth, with utmost discretion, a panoply of whispers. From the start it was in perfect symbiosis with that sophisticated, elite world, in which garments by high-class tailors and seamstresses were a fundamental point of reference for style, along with perfumes, leather accessories, and other extraordinarily fine hand-made objects.
The alchemy of perfumed essences
Stills, pipettes, test tubes and measuring flasks: instruments used in the art of perfumery in order to calibrate the mysterious procedures of blending, enfleurage and distillation, controlling the nuances of a thousand perfumed substances to perfection. Our irresistible eau de cologne was created here, amongst essences, extracts and oils, in a small perfumery workshop.
Its bottle, with pure and linear design, would arrive later, inspired by Art Deco, and hand-made by skilful glass craftsmen. Still today it is hallmarked by its black top in Bakelite, the material that was used for the buttons of radios in the early decades of the 20th century.
The value of imperfection
Today, Acqua di Parma is still made with the same care that determined its original success: natural ingredients, hand-distillation, the same original recipe.
The house classic, Colonia, and Iris Nobile and Colonia Assoluta are hand packed, even today.
The process is performed in a small workshop where a woman, with delicate and precise movements, applies the label by hand to every bottle, and because of this it is not always perfectly straight.
In the same way, the fine circular or cylindrical boxes used for the packaging are hand-made, enhanced by the hand-embossed regal house shield.
The packaging is prepared by hand, wrapping each box or cylinder with the traditional yellow embossed paper of the same “Parma Yellow” which, according to art historians, was used on the façades of the finest Parma buildings since 1700.
The discreet fascination of luxury
Luxury today, as in the past, consists of good taste and refinement. Today, however, its distinctive traits are more subtle and intangible: quality materials, perfection of cut, delicacy of stitching, and the attention lavished on handmade detailing
The quest for the unique, tailor-made creation is increasingly becoming the epitome of individual expression.
The world of the artisan
Discover the fascination of clicking needles and the rhythmic sounds of the sewing machine. Other characteristic sounds include the whoosh of a blade, the scrape of a smoothing stone, the squeal of a socket punch. An introduction into a world of patience and perfection, of gestures that require enduring apprenticeship, and manual skills that have to be continually adapted to new requirements.
Discover this typically Italian universe of the artisan’s shop.
Modo italiano, the style of Acqua di Parma
Since the beginning of the 20th century, myriad small workshops have been working for Acqua di Parma, creating superb packaging, splendid glass bottles, perfumed candles and embossed paper. Real “must have” products for a sophisticated and cosmopolitan clientele.
A unique and irreplaceable microcosm that is both dynamic and in tune with contemporary life. A world in which skills passed down from generation to generation are used to express individual talent, while also forging the cultural identity of an entire community.
Every Italian handcrafted product descends from the extraordinary tradition of manual skill that dates back to the Renaissance. Indeed, today’s concept of 'Made in Italy' has an illustrious predecessor in a phrase that, more than five centuries ago, denoted the artistic pre-eminence of a nation and its taste for handcrafted products: à la façon d'Italie, ‘the Italian way’.
This Italian way of making things, today as in the past, is an expression of an ability to create objects with an unmistakable aesthetic identity which, like Acqua di Parma, is a way of life, a way of being.
