Gordons Dry Gin

In 1769, Alexander Gordon moved to London and later opened his distillery in Clerkenwell (Clerk’s Well), chosen for the purity of its water.

Here, he developed GORDON’S® Special London Dry Gin. It was a gin of the highest quality, using the purest ingredients, and without any of the sugar commonly added to inferior gin to mask the rough and unbalanced spirit.

In fact, GORDON’S® gin was distilled three times for extra dryness and purity. It was an overnight sensation.

The recipe for GORDON’S® gin is known to only 12 people in the world. It includes juniper, coriander seeds, angelica root and other botanicals that remain a secret.

We use whole spices and berries (rather than cheap extracts), and mature them for 18 long months for that distinctive and sophisticated GORDON’S® taste.

For over 200 years, the recipe has remained a closely guarded secret (though not by the same 12 people, obviously).

Like many great inventions, the gin and tonic was both a work of genius and a happy accident. In India, a daily dose of quinine was taken as protection against malaria

The rather bitter taste was made more palatable by adding soda water and sweetened lemon juice to it. As they returned home to the UK, many old India hands brought home a taste for this rather exotic drink, and by the 20’s tonic water (as it became known) had become perhaps the world’s first and finest mixer

In the 19th century glass technology was not at the cutting edge.

Only green glass could be produced in volume, hence our familiar square green bottle with its distinctive black and white label. In 1908, we received our first big export order from Australia and, to mark the occasion, produced a limited edition bottle.

It was made from clear glass and was such a success that we decided that in future all export bottles would be perfectly clear glass while in the UK, our gin would always be in its traditional green bottle. We do hope we’ve made ourselves clear.

We only select botanicals of perfect quality for our gin.

We’re looking for a perfect balance of botanicals so that the distinctive taste of junipers can surge through "rather like the string section of an orchestra," as our Master Distiller once put it.

It’s an art not a science and it’s the secret of GORDON’S® gin.
